Middle School STEM

STEM is integrated into academic classes, electives and clubs.

Middle School STEM

Our middle schoolers have countless opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering and math subjects. Academic courses, electives, clubs, competitions, teams – all allow students to introduce themselves to new concepts, or dig in to deepen knowledge in subjects they are already passionate about. It’s great to win regional and national awards – and we do! – but our students and teachers really revel in the discoveries they make along the way.

Academic Courses

Harker students are enrolled in the math courses which best fit their needs, regardless of grade level. Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus are available, as are more advanced courses for the students who need them.

Our science program focuses on earth science (grade 6), chemistry and physics (grade 7) and biology with an emphasis on human anatomy and physiology (grade 8), but students also can take an after-school research class to continue their own interests. Many middle school students will present poster sessions at our annual research symposium. Learn more about our research program.

Computer courses, which are not language-specific, are designed to enhance problem-solving skills while refining research and technological skills. In addition to the required computer science course at each grade level, three electives are available: Elective Sites, Graphics and Animations on the Web (grade 6); Robotics (grades 7-8); and JAVA Programming (grade 8).

And students and teachers with specific interests have started lots of STEM-oriented clubs:

  • Tech Club
  • Builder’s Delight
  • Discovery X Club
  • Game Design Club
  • Stock Market Club
  • Tech Ninjas
  • Things That Fly Club

State-of-the-Art Technology & Facilities

Our middle school 1:1 laptop program puts a laptop in every student’s hands and allows teachers to be even more innovative with their assignments. Digital microscopes, Vernier probes and Logger Lites enhance the lab experience, and the geological Layered Earth program assists children with earth science via interactive simulations. Geometer's SketchPad and Mathematica to bring math to life for geometry and pre-calculus classes.

STEM Achievements

We design our programs and offerings at Harker to inspire students to explore their passions, develop their strengths and share their talents with their classmates, teammates and the greater community. Our students are eager to make a difference, and we celebrate all of their accomplishments.
