Lower School Performing Arts

At Harker’s lower school, we believe art is an essential element of our complete curriculum. When we weave the arts into everything we do here at Harker, our learning environment promotes creativity, self-confidence and collaboration. We consider those essential ingredients for a rich, well-rounded education.

Dance Show

Academic Courses & After-School Activities

With our comprehensive performing arts program, we nurture our students’ creative expression and confidence through dance, drama, vocal and instrumental music and musical theater.

In the lower school, performing arts classes include general music and theater instruction as well as dance fundamentals. Through these classes, students build literacy, learn problem-solving and teamwork, build poise and confidence in performing and develop a stage presence early on that carries over into the classroom and in their future academic careers. After school, our program continues with our 80-member choir, classes in all dance styles, orchestra, string and jazz bands.

G5 Show

Performances

Every year, students at each grade level perform at least one staged production for families and friends. It’s a fun, shared activity that all students enjoy, even our shyest performers. Performances include:

  • Kindergarten: spring show
  • Grade 1: holiday show
  • Grade 2-3: combined holiday show
  • Grade 4: annual family picnic and Grandparents’ Day shows
  • Grade 5: full-length musical theater production

Our performing arts teachers are experts at their crafts and outstanding educators. With more than a dozen full-time performing arts teachers for K-12, there are six dedicated to the lower school performing arts program.
