The Cornerstones of Success Campaign: Phases 1-5
Phase 1 of the Cornerstones Campaign involved the purchase and renovation of the Bucknall campus for our primary and elementary students. These facilities were funded in large part by many generous Harker families, and the new campus opened in September 1998.
Renovations to the Bucknall campus included new heating and air conditioning systems; new computer and electrical systems; new paint, carpets, flooring and counter space; densely planting the perimeter of the grounds; and adding fences and gates. Additional new features included:
- new gymnasium/classroom building
- state-of-the-art stage
- two new fully equipped commercial kitchens
- new kindergarten area
- separate science labs for grades 2-3
- beautiful new pool
Phase 2 of the Cornerstones Campaign began in response to the need for a dedicated space for middle school students on the Saratoga campus after the upper school opened. In September 2000, Shah Hall was dedicated, recognizing the visionary gift of Ajay Shah and Lata Krishnan.
Shah Hall currently houses our history department as well as classrooms for psychology, economics and photography. Our student affairs staff and counseling staff also operates out of Shah. On the second floor of Shah Hall, history students can find video and text resources for research or personal enrichment in the John Near Resource Center, a space provided for by the Class of 2010.
Phase 3 was finished in August 2008. Named for The Harker School’s founding visionaries, Howard and Diana Nichols, Nichols Hall is a science and technology center that provides our upper school students with classrooms and labs to match their talents and capabilities. Nichols Hall is gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified and was designed and constructed with an eye toward making the building as “green” as possible. Learn more about the many “green” features of Nichols Hall.
This phase also included the construction of the key athletic facilities Davis Field and Singh Aquatic Center. These facilities have been instrumental in increasing school spirit around athletic events and inspiring our student athletes to compete at the highest levels.
In early 2013, Harker seized the opportunity to bid on and acquire the Union Avenue campus, which opened as Harker Preschool later that year. This 8-acre campus is located within minutes of our other campuses and features beautiful green areas and classrooms that are currently being used for our 3-year-old, 4-year-old and transitional kindergarten programs. The Union campus will eventually welcome lower school students as we transition away from the Blackford lease and move the middle school students to the Bucknall campus.
Harker is currently in Phase 5 of the Cornerstones of Success Campaign for a new theater and gym on the Saratoga campus. Features include a 500+ seat theater and regulation-size athletic court with dual-side bleachers.
Moving forward with the construction of the new theater and gymnasium on the Saratoga campus will help us solidify the foundation for building a world-class Pre-12 school, further enhancing our whole-mission approach.
