Harker Summer Advanced English Institute

The Harker School’s Advanced English Institute, a summer program of rigorous instruction in all aspects of English, provides access to curriculum that aligns with independent school standards.

Formal diagnostic tools measure student strengths, weaknesses, and most importantly progress. Small class enrollment enables individualized instruction and personalized guided practices.

Assignments cover five English linguistic skills: grammar, academic and essay writing, reading, vocabulary, and oral expression. Additionally, within these categories practices also include the sub-groups of literature, reading comprehension, usage, American idioms, and syntax. Informal conversation and pronunciation assessments authenticate speaking abilities.

The Harker School's Advanced English Institute summer program makes rapid English language and writing acquisition possible through intensified direct instruction of grammar rules, vocabulary-in-context, and literary analysis. Directed practice provides students with repetitive reviews that explore and evaluate language, intent and audience so that retention occurs.

Personal feedback, in the form of edited revisions of written work, effects ample opportunities to improve writing skills while completing quality informational, persuasive, literary analysis, and narrative assignments.

SSAT preparation & practice provides additional insights on the students’ level of English proficiency. Students will earn a Harker’s Certificate of English Proficiency upon completion of the program.
