Upper School Speech & Debate
The speech and debate program at Harker’s upper school motivates students to think critically about current national and global events, strengthen their public speaking skills and develop their leadership capabilities. When our students learn to be effective communicators and strong leaders, we see it translate into greater academic success.
Academic Courses & After-School Activities
In the upper school, our innovative curriculum includes a communication studies academic requirement in addition to enriching academic electives and after-school activities.
- Introduction to Speech and Debate
- Intermediate Debate: Classes offered include public forum, congressional debate, speech, Lincoln-Douglas debate and policy debate
- Competitive Debate: Classes offered include public forum, congressional debate, speech, Lincoln-Douglas debate and policy debate
- Speech and Debate Team: Our team competes at events held here at Harker and across the country.
Speech & Debate Teachers
Our communication studies faculty is the cornerstone of our speech and debate program. All of them have advanced degrees in areas like communications studies and rhetoric. With their extensive experience leading award-winning speech and debate programs, they serve as excellent teachers, coaches and mentors to our students.
