Before joining Harker in 2013, Ellen Austin taught journalism and AP Literature at Palo Alto High School, where she also advised their sports magazine and broadcast network. Prior to that she worked at two high schools in Minnesota, where her combined experience included teaching journalism and English, advising the newspapers, coaching debate and Knowledge Bowl, assistant coaching the speech team and coordinating a foreign student exchange.
Ms. Austin was the Dow Jones News Fund 2012 National Journalism Teacher of the Year and the 2011 California CAL-JEC Journalism Teacher of the Year. She has been a board member of the Northern California Journalism Education Association since 2008 and was a national board member and regional director for the Journalism Education Association from 2008-10. She also received the 2007 Journalism Education Association Rising Star Award. Ms. Austin has been awarded a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Vienna, a Rotary Grant to Central America and, most recently, a National Endowment for the Humanities grant for a Chaucer seminar in the summer of 2012.
A native of Michigan raised in Illinois, Ms. Austin is a firm Fighting Illini fan during football season, but she has become a S.F. Giants fan with her move West. She loves travel of all kinds, photography, writing, and counts the enjoyment of all types of music as a major constant in her family’s life.
