Software @ Harker
Mathematica
Harker's upper level mathematics courses (Pre-Calculus and beyond) use Wolfram's Mathematica for students as one of many pedagogical tools. By special arrangement with Wolfram, Harker students taking relevant math classes pay an initial user fee their first year and a renewal fee each succeeding year until they graduate. This guarantees them maintenance and continuous upgrades throughout their time as students, and a permanent copy of the latest version that they receive at graduation. Students must use the Harker-provided software.
In order to obtain the most favorable pricing, Harker buys licenses in bulk each summer and bills student accounts once enrollments are stable. For this program to work, Harker requires that all eligible students pay this fee even if they have acquired their own legal copy by other means. Our most recent cost comparison shows that even if version upgrades came only every two years, Harker families save more than $100 through this bulk purchase program.
